RE: Help..... We need Opinions on what RV to Buy?

It's definitely a buyer's market. I assume you aren't considering used - there's a lot of deals out there. Be very careful if you are trading in your old unit and it needs a payoff. Dealers are dropping like flies and you don't want to get stuck paying off two notes.

RE: Absorbed Glass Matt Batteries

For someone willing to do their own maintenance, wet cells are a low cost solution. That maintenance includes adding water, verifying the specific gravity of EACH cell routinely, performing an equalizing (desulphating) charge when required (not per a set schedule like the newer chargers use - this requires disconnecting each battery and equalizing seperately). Cleaning connections and tops of batteries (since they gas, the corrosion is much higher). Taking proper care is critical (I've seen batteries explode, and people blinded). Never disconnect a battery under load or being charged. For me, the additional cost for AGMs is well worth it. Check the connections for tightness (by loosening, NOT tightening!) once a year and yer done...

RE: Any old Rock n Rollers out there?

Well, I did flip out on acid at the last Derek and the Dominos concert in Phoenix. I got to see Dark Side of the Moon. My very first concert was King Crimson. My mom made my brother take me. I guess if you know who played "Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict" then you know your stuff...

RE: Sum up your Season

The wife had significant medical issues this year, including a tib/fib fracture and discovering a blockage requiring a stent. We got in a trip to see her 3 boys play guitar in NC, and out to Dallas and Nacogdoches for a family/factory trip. The coach hasn't gotten more than 50 miles since june. More next year!

RE: Got to get me one of these!!

Too bad they couldn't have made it retro to Powertech generators. Oh well, at least there are several non wireless setups for them.

RE: Marathon Prevost coaches...

No, more like 3500... Buy any other coach and it will have delivery miles on it too unless you pick it up at the factory. You expect them to flatbed a 30,000lb 45 foot coach that far?

RE: CAT -vs- Cummins

Cat and Cummins are nearly the same. There's no substitute for cubic inches. Go with the larger motor when possible.

RE: Ultra Power performance Chip

Power chips work well for turbo engines, diesels or gas. Very little if any improvement for normally aspirated engines. Little or no difference for steady state highway speeds even for turbo engines. If you have a normally aspirated engine, you will get far more improvement by making it breathe - intake/exhaust work, port matching. Dyno time is paramount.

RE: Long Term Durability of a Not So High End Motorhome

In my opinion, the biggest concern is preventing water leaks/intrusion. Nothing will turn ANY coach into junk faster. Second is engine/trans maintenance since they are the highest dollar components. If you like your coach layout and power consider having it renovated. Bob Lee just started his renovation company in Oregon. Foretravel is now doing renovations on any coach. There are plenty of places listed in the back of FMCA/Motorhome magazine if you don't have the time or ability to do it yerself. If you are willing to keep your coach 5 years, $10-15K in renovations is a whole lot cheaper than buying a newer one - especially in this market! Tile/wood floors, new cabinets, dual pane windows, new/recovered furniture, LCD panels - all increase your liveability and enjoyment. You won't recover most of the additional investment when you do sell the coach (<10%, usually), but it sure will sell faster! As a friend said when he had his 99 Foretravel painted (with all new dual pane windows installed and a projector headlight conversion - $25k), 'Life is too short to drive ugly'...

RE: Cummins DP Engines`

I believe the ISBXT is a 6.3 or 6.7L. The ISC is an 8.3L. The ISB is derived from the B5.9, and the ISC from the venerable C8.3.

RE: Foretravel Experts !

I think the price is a bit high for the market and the repo status. For instance there's an 07 on consignment right now at Foretravel of TX for 350K with only 8,000 miles. It would be 'ok' at or near the listed price. It would be a 'deal' at $265-260K. Financing is really tough right now, with 20% expected and little give...

RE: Annapolis MD.

w If you are ex military, the naval academy has a campground on thier grounds but I have not been there so I can not tell you much about it. It's at the annex, so its at least 4 miles away. Tough for a 40 footer. More suitable for 5th wheels and 36' or less. You need to be retired military, civil service or active duty to use it. I looked it over last year. It wouldn't be high on my list and I'm not picky! We stayed in my stepdaughter's back yard in Severna Park and ran a 20A power cord out. My mum-in-law lives across the street from William Paca Gardens in Annapolis but there ain't no parking there!

RE: motorhome purchase new/used plan

Also consider used Newells and Foretravels. If quality is your main concern, there are some great buys out there. E-9 retired

RE: Pacbrake PRXB upgrade. (Here goes!!)

Just remember - the PRXB doesn't increase the maximum braking force. It offers improved braking force at lower RPMs where a regular exhaust brake loses braking effect.

RE: U Line Icemaker

You need a mold heater repair kit. I bought my first one from Motorhomes of Texas - about 140.00. I bought my last one from the Foretravel factory for 60.00. Its not a hard job. It comes with the mold heater, instructions and a tube of 'Alumilastic'. This is a plastic putty with aluminum powder mixed in it - this is placed on the bottom of the mold heater which is then attached to the mounting plate, acting as a heat sink. It takes about an hour and a half, simple hand tools. Mold heaters typically last about 8-10 years in a U-line. A side benefit is that it also replaces the plastic covered ice mold, which by the time the mold heater has gone south needs replacement anyway. The aluminum underneath oxidizes, forcing up and cracking the plastic coating. Then nasty things get included in the ice... The reason this happens in a U-line is that its not in use all the time like a reefer ice maker...

RE: Jake Brake ??

A 'jake brake' is like Kleenex is to facial tissue. Jacob's designed and patented the 'C' brake as an engine brake for medium/large duty diesel engines. They also make exhaust brakes. On Cummins you can get an engine brake on the ISL, ISM/M11, ISX, but not on the ISC/C8.3, ISB/B5.9... Displacement is really the deciding factor on Jacobs deciding to support building one for a particular engine - generally 'around' 9 liters or above. An exhaust brake provides less than 50% braking power compared to an engine brake. This braking power falls off dramatically as rpms drop. Some newer exh brake designs (PRXB, etc) have improved this.

RE: Can used prices go any lower?

Prices can drop quite a bit more over the next 6 months - especially for newer/repo/'aquired' coaches (coaches taken over bt a financial institution due to a dealer failure). If the financial markets take some more hits before November it will get very bleak for sales between then and March when its 'off season'.

RE: Saf-Tee / Saf-TTE tire monitor

Oh btw they clearly stated that Safe-Tee was out! I wonder if that's why they suddenly created a new website? Trying to pull a fast one on their supplier... I don't think it was a supplier issue - I think it was a cash flow issue. They didn't pay their bills, so they (eventually) got cut off. Now if the new distributor sells near Saf-Tee's prices I might take another look. Otherwise its the RV360 for me. I really want this product to succeed - even if its to just put pressure on the market. With 5 or 6 products relatively available, these systems are way overpriced. Its not an 800.00 plus option on a car...
